HC21 introduce Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee Implant

Women represent the most important group of knee replacement patients as they comprise the largest proportion of patients, but also tend to have poorer results. This is no surprise as until now there have been no knee replacements designed specifically to fit the different shape of a woman's knee. The Zimmer® NexGen® knee is the first and only knee replacement to offer the Gender Solutions™ option, that has been designed specifically to fit the different shape of a woman's knee and the way it works. It is expected that the improvements will help female patients to have better function, less pain and better stability.

The Zimmer Gender Solutions knee implant replaces the thighbone portion of the knee. Knee replacements have long been available in many different sizes, but pioneering research conducted for Zimmer shows getting a good fit is not just about size, it is about shape.

There are three main differences between the Zimmer Gender Solutions knee implant and a traditional “unisex” implant, reflecting the typical shape of a female knee:

Thinner profile

A thinner profile accommodates the typically less prominent kneecap at the front of a woman’s knee, reducing the feeling of ‘bulkiness’ and associated pain.  This potentially results in a greater range of knee motion and more natural movement.

Contoured shape

A contoured shape closely matches the narrower anatomy of the female knee and gives a more precise fit.  This helps prevent the implant from overhanging the bone and pressing on surrounding ligaments or tendons, which can cause pain.
